Man-eaters

MAN-EATERS vol 1 named one of Amazon's Best Books of 2019 (so far)

MAN-EATERS vol 1 (collecting issues 1-4) was just named One of the Best Books of the Year ("so far") by Amazon.  That's pretty neat, right?!

We are really grateful.

You can buy MAN-EATERS vol 1 and MAN-EATERS vol 2 (collecting issues 5-8) at your local comic book store and/or independent bookshop.

To review, because it's complicated: Single issues come out every month and are available at comic book stores.  (So as I write this, comic book stores have up to issue #9.) Issues are then collected and published as volumes, and it is only at this point that the comic book is available in book stores (in addition to comic book stores).  It is a very silly and self-defeating distribution model.  But it is what we have.

MAN-EATERS vol 3 (collecting issues 9-12) will be published in Sept or Oct (I think?).

Here endeth the lesson.

MAN-EATERS nominated for an EISNER AWARD

My comic book, MAN-EATERS, has been nominated for an Eisner Award for "Best New Series."  It's a pretty big deal.  Like, seriously.  Single issues are available in comic book stores (issue 8 came out this week!).  Volumes -- which collect 4 issues at a time -- are available at comic book stores AND book stores. Congratulations to our amazing creative team: Lia Miternique, Elise McCall, Joe Caramanga, Rachelle Rosenberg, Kate Niemczyk, Eliza Mohan, Stella Greenvoss, Emily Powell, Ava Hood, Kyle Scanlon, and our partners at Image Comics. Most of all, thank you.  Thank YOU.

MAN-EATERS, vol 1, announced

MAN-EATERS volume 1 is coming out in March. (This collects MAN-EATERS issues 1-4.)  If you are comics-curious, but not ready to venture into a comic book store to buy the individual "floppy" issues, this is exciting news. Because volumes are available at bookstores. Like REAL BOOKS. Also they are heavier and more easily read in the bathtub. Obviously, if you are on the side of good, you will buy the volume at your local independent bookstore or comic book store or from a friend who needs the money. The hardworking folks at book stores and comic book stores LOVE pre-orders.  You will see their eyes light up with gratitude and cheer.  You can also order MAN-EATERS Vol 1 from the Information Super Highway.  (I'm determined to bring that term back.)  (It means the internet.) (It didn't really catch on.) (The TERM never caught on. The internet caught on fine.)

MAN-EATERS #4 in comic book stores on Dec 26, 2018

Issue #4 of MAN-EATERS comes out on Wednesday, Dec 26th. It's called "CAT FIGHT: A Boy's Guide to Dangerous Cats."  Available at comic book stores, and on the Information Super Highway (young people know it as the Internet?).  We literally broke every rule of comic book making with this one. Sorry!

I love it.  So.  Much.

Man-eaters, issue #1, in stores Wednesday 9/26

The first issue of my new comic book series is coming out this Wednesday (9/26).  It will be at comic book stores and available through digital comic book portals.  If you have a favorite local comic book store, please visit it!  If you don't know where a comic book store is in your area, Google "comic book store near me" and cross your fingers.  They will be nice to you.  They like to sell things.

Man-eaters is suitable for ages 13 and up.  It's part horror, part cultural satire, part coming of age story.  The central character is twelve.  Her dad is a detective.  And they live in a world where girls sometimes turn into homicidal panthers when they get their periods.  So, that's super awkward.

Sales are the only way we will keep this thing afloat.  And if we can get a few issues out we'll be able to publish a collection and actually offer it in book stores.  That is my goal, because I think there's a large audience for this comic who may not know how to find it until then.

New comic book series this Sept.

I've been working on this for awhile and can officially make the news public: I have a new monthly comic book series coming out in September.  MAN-EATERS reunites the creative team from MOCKINGBIRD -- artist Kate Niemczyk, colorist Rachelle Rosenberg, letterer Joe Caramagna, and writer Chelsea Cain (cough, I love her) -- along with cover artist and production wizard Lia Miternique and artist Stella Greenvoss. It's kind of a big deal.  It's my first comic since MOCKINGBIRD, so I'd be lying if I said I didn't have some Twitter-related PTSD.  But I also have much better privacy settings and a hair trigger.  I know the story goes that I left comics after MOCKINGBIRD, that I was driven away, dropped off at the state line by some trolls in a pick-up truck.  I didn't leave comics.  Comics left me.  I've been right here.  I've been busy, working on this series, developing the exact story I wanted to tell, finding the perfect home for it - Image Comics - and then putting together my dream team.  (If you've ever seen the tv show, The A-Team, it was EXACTLY like that.)  MAN-EATERS combines a lot of my interests: cats, murder, feminism, propaganda, dad with beards, detectives, people who are good at their jobs, sarcastic t-shirts, etc.  I think that you will like it.

Here's the pitch:

A mutation in Toxoplasmosis causes menstruating women to turn into ferocious killer wildcats—easily provoked and extremely dangerous. As panic spreads and paranoia takes root, the fate of the world rides on the shoulders of one twelve-year-old girl. Part Cat People, part The Handmaid’s Tale, all pro-feline agenda.

I'll post some art when I can.

Hey, thanks for reading.
